Indigenous Clay, May, 2010 Firing

The next 2 pages are an overview of some of the pots that came out of a firing that was unpacked on May 2, 2010.  The kiln used was a "Manibigama II" design and the pots were fired in a heavily reducing atmosphere with a bit of damp wood introduced intermittently during the last 6 hours of the firing in order to introduce some H2O and to help hold the temperature steady at a hard cone 11 in the front.  A reducing atmosphere was continued during the cooling cycle until the internal temperature was about 1500F. As you can see, some pots reflect the effects of reduction cooling and some do not.
Most of the clays pictured contain at least 50% indigenous clay from Stancill's Mine near the Susquehanna River/Northern edge of the Chesapeake Bay.
